An inspired design for the Celtic Gardens

Garden Design

Jenny's SketchesJenny Beale had the idea for the Celtic Gardens and asked Mary Reynolds, Gold-Medal winner at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2002, to create a concept and the design. Mary started on the project before her Chelsea win and completed the design later in 2002.

It was a big challenge to translate the design into actual gardens over the period 2003-2004, ready for the opening in July 2004. We had to source 35 standing stones, create a 100m long earth woman, turn copper hot-water tanks into artistic flames, build spiral-shaped stone walls, commission the art and craft works, build the Roundhouse and much more! Jenny supervised the development which was carried out by local craftspeople and builders, with help from experts and volunteers.

Since her Chelsea win, Mary Reynolds has received many international commissions, including designing gardens for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and for the BBC. She lives in Co. Kerry.Garden Design

The spiral-shaped beds in the Lughnasa Garden were re-designed as an attractive themed herb garden in 2009 by Galway-based gardener and designer Laura O'Connor.
